Commercial to Residential: Office to Home Office

05 Jun 2023

Getting the interior right in your home office is not only great for productivity, but it is great for the mind. Even if it is a separate room in your house or in the corner of another room take pride in your workspace. Consider it as a functional space that is different from the rest of the house. If you work from home a lot it is essential that this space becomes a designated area for work, keeping your work life and home life separate.  It will help with setting out the boundaries for your working day helping you to focus more and be more productive.

Keep Clutter Down

Workplaces try to keep clutter down and stored away to create an organised environment. Attempting this at home will create a more peaceful space to work in and reduce over-stimulation with items around your office. Try and hide cables away by placing them under the carpet, clipping them to the desk or use an under the desk tray. If using multiple devices invest in a charger dock that will keep all the wires in one central place. Organise your paperwork into files or have some in and out trays. Even better try and go paperless. A wall organiser or a peg board is great for hanging a calendar or a to do list.

Maximise Natural Light

A recent study at Cornell showed workers exposed to natural light experienced an 84% drop in issues such as headaches, eyestrain, and blurred vision. Positioning your desk near a window will help boost your mood and can lead to increased productivity and creativity. If it is not possible to use natural light make sure you have a good desk lamp. This will not only help with reducing any dimness from your PC but will also help alleviate eye strain.

Supportive chair

We spend a long time sitting at our desk and when at home, we should not forget the benefits of a supportive chair. Look for something with good lumber support and adjustable seating, like you would have in an office. A good chair does not have to break the bank, there are some great ones which are reasonably priced. You spend a lot of time in your chair, so this where you need to invest a bit of time and more money to get the right one.

Different Area’s for Different Tasks

Offices now create different areas for employees to use for different tasks. This is called agile working and it is about giving employees the choices about where they want to perform a particular task, which is proven to increase productivity and innovation. It can be hard to do this at home due to a lack of space. However, it can be done simply by adding an armchair or a high table for different tasks to help move away from your desk. A sit-stand desk or a PC riser are great for breaking up the monotony of working in one position. They are great not only for productivity and flexibility and you’re your health.

Add Plants and Natural Materials

Biophilic Design is the practice of connecting people and nature within our built environments. It is a popular trend in Office Design to help boost efficiency, creativity, and morale. So, incorporating this into your home office will have a positive impact. Bringing in some live plants will not only improve your air quality, but it has been proven to put you in a more positive mindset.
